Understanding the 2027 Social Security COLA Increase

On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. This is the largest Social Security benefit increase since 2023.

The adjustment will affect roughly 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). At Triumph Planning Solutions, we believe it is important to understand what is changing, what the increase could mean for your monthly cash flow, and which details to review as 2027 approaches.

What Will the 3.6% Increase Mean for Beneficiaries?

Beginning in January 2027, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% increase in their monthly payments. That is higher than the 2.8% COLA provided for 2026.

The SSA estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will rise by about $75, increasing from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that comes to approximately $900 in additional benefits. SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% adjustment, with their updated payments beginning on December 31, 2026.

The purpose of a COLA is to help benefits retain purchasing power when the cost of everyday needs rises. Still, the precise dollar increase will depend on the amount of Social Security benefits an individual currently receives.

How Does the SSA Calculate the COLA?

The SSA determines the annual cost-of-living adjustment by monitoring changes in the prices of common goods and services, including food, transportation, and housing. Its calculation relies on an inflation measure called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W.

To establish the adjustment, the SSA compares CPI-W data from July through September with the same three-month period from the prior year. For 2027, that comparison produced a 3.6% increase.

While the COLA is intended to help Social Security payments keep pace with inflation, it may not fully account for every increase in household spending. Healthcare and other necessary expenses, in particular, can rise at a different pace than the index used for the calculation.

What Other Social Security Updates Are Expected in 2027?

In addition to the higher monthly benefit, the SSA announced several other updates that may matter to people who are working, preparing to retire, or already collecting benefits.

For 2027, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300.

The earnings limit applies only to people receiving Social Security retirement or survivor benefits. If you will be below full retirement age for all of 2027, the earnings limit will be $25,560. If you reach full retirement age during 2027, the limit will be $67,920 for earnings received before the month you reach that age. After reaching full retirement age, there is no earnings limit.

How Could Medicare Change the Amount You Receive?

A higher Social Security benefit does not always translate into the full increase appearing in your monthly deposit. Medicare premiums can affect the amount you receive.

For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are withheld directly from Social Security payments. If those premiums rise in 2027, they may reduce part of the benefit increase created by the COLA.

For that reason, it is helpful to look at both your revised Social Security benefit statement and your Medicare costs. Reviewing both figures can provide a more accurate picture of the additional income you may have available each month.

Steps to Consider for 2027

As you prepare for the upcoming changes, consider reviewing the following items:

  • Confirm your revised benefit amount. Once updated information is available, you can view your personalized COLA notice and benefit details through your my Social Security account.
  • Update your retirement budget. Consider the higher benefit alongside possible changes to Medicare premiums, taxes, and other household expenses.
  • Review your retirement approach. If retirement is approaching or you have not yet claimed Social Security, this may be a useful time to revisit your claiming schedule and the role benefits play in your overall financial plan.

The 2027 COLA may create a meaningful adjustment in retirement income, but it is most useful when considered alongside your complete financial picture. Triumph Planning Solutions can help you evaluate how these updates may affect your income, spending plan, and broader retirement strategy.
